Medicine Hat, Alberta (April 27, 2021) On Alert: There is a second positive case of COVID-19 at Medicine Hat Christian School. Alberta Health Services has identified an additional case of COVID-19 at our school, and we remain On Alert. Currently, there are two active positive cases connected to our school. As a result, AHS has directed some students and staff to quarantine for a specified time period; our school will remain open. We have conducted a thorough investigation, as a result all close contacts of the positive case have been identified and quarantined.

We will support this individual and their family and wish them a safe and speedy recovery. We ask families and students to show compassion and kindness for those that have been impacted by a positive COVID-19 case. As always, we will work collectively to foster a safe, caring and welcoming school environment.

We are confident, based on AHS guidance, that those who have not been directed to quarantine can attend school safely. Siblings and family members of close contacts are not required to quarantine; however, they are asked to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19.

We know that it may be difficult to hear of a second positive COVID case in our school community. The health and safety of our students and staff is our priority and we continue to perform enhanced cleaning and proper hand hygiene protocols in schools. We have worked with AHS to build and continually review our practices. The daily health measures that we have in place at our school are effective in limiting the spread of COVID-19 and variants of concern. Although it is not possible for us to stop COVID-19 and the variants of concern from spreading in our schools, we are committed to working together to protect our school community, reduce exposure and limit the spread.

We remind ALL parents/guardians of students, as well as any staff/visitors/volunteers to our school to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19. Please remember to complete the Alberta Daily Health Check each day prior to attending school. If your child has any symptoms of COVID-19 listed on the Alberta Health Daily Checklist, please fill out the online Alberta Health Services COVID-19 self-assessment or call Health Link at 811 and keep them home. For more information about positive COVID-19 cases in school please read COVID-19 in Schools (k-12) setting.

Out of an abundance of caution, and as we continue our focus on preventing the spread of COVID-19, we have directed our custodial services team to conduct enhanced cleaning protocols before students and staff come back into the building. This additional cleaning will focus on areas where the individual was present along with high touch areas and surfaces throughout the school.

Rest assured that we will continue to work closely with AHS and the Medical Officer of Health in the South Zone to ensure that we follow their ongoing recommendations. For media inquiries contact Lee Krasilowez 403.977.9086 or lee.krasilowez@sd76.ab.ca We will continue to provide information to parents and guardians as it is available, thank you for your continued support.
