Medicine Hat, AB (Sept 8, 2021): Over the past week we have been made aware of positive COVID-19 cases in all MHPSD schools. Since positive COVID-19 cases continue to trend upward in our community, we expect that positive cases will continue to be present in our schools. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority and we continue to be vigilant in our response.

In our daily operations, we continue to:

  • Conduct daily enhanced cleaning
  • Require mandatory masking
  • Promote frequent and proper hand hygiene
  • Cohort in our elementary classes
  • Support physical distancing
  • Ensure adequate ventilation

Medicine Hat Public School Division staff monitor daily for student absence due to illness; we report to Alberta Health Services (AHS) when greater than 10% school-wide and follow their guidance and recommendations. We will continue to support students and staff that are ill or symptomatic.

AHS Public Health Actions

AHS is no longer monitoring positive COVID-19 cases in schools. Therefore, they are no longer notifying us when a positive case is connected to a school. Close contacts are no longer required to quarantine. AHS is not contact tracing and students are not required to quarantine if there is a case of COVID-19 at school, even if that case is in their classroom.

How You Can Help

We encourage families to continue reporting absence due to illness and positive test results to the school, although it is not required. If we are aware of positive COVID-19 cases, we can take appropriate action to mitigate the spread to the best of our ability.

Albertans that test positive or have any core symptoms that are not related to a pre-existing illness or health condition are legally required to isolate for 10 daysFor more information on what to do when children have any symptoms of illness please follow AHS isolation and quarantine requirements.
