WHEN DOES SCHOOL START?
First day back to school for grades 1-9 is on Monday August 30, 2021. Please refer to
CHHS and MHHS websites for more information on start dates for grades 10 through 12.

HOW WILL COVID-19 IMPACT THE 2021-22 SCHOOL YEAR?
At this point we are looking forward to a return to normal on August 30 as Alberta has lifted the COVID restrictions. Take a moment to read through the 2021-2022 Government of Alberta School Year Plan and the following summary.

Public health recommendations

  • Specific health best practices will be developed over the summer and recommendations may vary by age group. Extensive health measures that were put in place for 2020-21 will be eased or removed.
    • It is expected that students and staff will no longer be required to wear a mask.
    • Some transmission prevention practices will continue, including increased cleaning of high traffic and high touch areas, staying at home when sick and hand cleaning hygiene practices.
    • Isolation and quarantine requirements, along with contact tracing requirements, will continue to evolve as immunization rates increase.
    • By fall 2021, the majority of Albertans 12 years and older will have had the opportunity to be fully vaccinated. Vaccines for children under 12 are still in clinical trials.
  • If the COVID-19 situation changes, the plan includes 2 contingency scenarios similar to those implemented in the current school year that will guide K to 12 schools.

Diploma exams and provincial achievement tests

  • Grade 12 diploma exams will be mandatory in the 2021-22 school year.
  • Diploma exams will be offered in every diploma course subject in November, January, April, June and August.
  • Grade 6 and 9 provincial achievement tests will resume and participation is mandatory for all schools not piloting the new draft Kindergarten to Grade 6 curriculum.

KINDERGARTEN:
For Kindergarten start dates visit your child’s school website; see list below. We will continue to offer Play & Learn, learn more about the program and learn how to register.

STUDENT OWNED DEVICES - CHROMEBOOKS, LAPTOPS, TABLETS, ETC.:

Every student in grades 3-12 need to have their own device that they can bring back and forth for the 2021-2022 school year. Children in k-2 will have access to a Chromebook in the classroom but will not take it home with them at the end of the day. Students will not be expected to work on their device all day, having opportunities to engage in other ways.

If a student already has their own reliable device that can operate google classroom, they are welcome to use it instead of purchasing a new device or borrowing a Chromebook from MHPSD. We will support families that do not have, and who do not have a device for their child.

  • Families are welcome to send any device (laptop, tablet, or Chromebook) to school with their child if it will allow them to access Google Classroom (this means having Google Chrome installed on the device) and complete their work. Students do not require expensive laptops or tablets to access online learning tools.
  • Any student that does not have access to a device will be provided with a loaner Chromebook from their school.
  • The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy allows any students to bring their personally owned devices into the schools and connect to the school network via the Wi-Fi. The schools Wi-Fi network has thorough restrictions placed on it to ensure that all students are kept safe while browsing online and are also unable to access websites that the school deems inappropriate for students. This restriction extends to various popular social media websites.
