Provincial and Federal COVID-19 Emergency Support Summary

This is a brief summary of the emergency relief benefits and resources available from the provincial and federal governments to support workers while their earnings are interrupted as a result of COVID-19.  Please note, this is a general overview and is not intended to be an inclusive list of all benefits you may be permitted to receive.  Eligibility and payment of benefits is not determined by the school division, and any inquiries or applications should be directed to the relative government agency.

Provincial Government

  • Utility payment - deferrals and no disconnection will occur for a 90-day period - Consult City of Medicine Hat website for full details.
  • Mortgage payments - Chartered banks and credit unions may be able to offer mortgage and loan deferral or payment options.  Contact your financial institution for details.
  • Rent payments - The Alberta government has announced protection for renters from eviction.
  • Student Loan Assistance - The Alberta government is implementing a six-month, interest-free moratorium for individuals in the process of repaying their Alberta student loans.

Federal Government

  • Personal Income Tax - Extension provided to June 1, 2020 to file personal income tax.
  • Canada Child Benefit - The annual benefit maximum payment amount has been increased.
  • GST Credit - Will provide low to modest income earners with one-time rebate payment in May 2020.
