Medicine Hat, AB (July 2, 2021): Hub Virtual School (kindergarten – grade 9 English). Medicine Hat Public School Division will extend Hub Virtual School as an option for all students in Alberta starting in the 2021-2022 school year.

In its second year, education through the Hub will cover the full rigor of the Alberta Education curriculum. Students will have access to scheduled classes from their homeroom teacher whose only focus will be to build meaningful relationships and teach students in their virtual classroom. Teachers will deliver lessons, engage students in group work, provide individual help and help families to support their children in at-home learning.  While assignments will be submitted via Google Classroom, students will not be tied to their electronic devices and will have opportunities to move around and engage in their learning in hands-on activities. All the while, teachers will be directly engaged with students throughout the school day. Student can expect:

  • Dedicated teacher for each class, providing responsive individual and classroom instruction
  • Daily LIVE instruction in google meets
  • Google Classroom as base student platform
  • Rigorous and relevant curricular instruction supporting the entirety of the Alberta Program of Studies in core subject areas taught by subject area experts
  • Options programs for Junior High school students
  • Student interactions and Social opportunities through classroom instruction and clubs
  • Recorded lessons
  • Local student access to extra curricular sports
  • Flexible programming
  • Safe and caring learning environment where everyone is welcome
  • Mental health and wellness supports

Junior high students will have access to additional complementary courses and options such as technology studies, programming, leadership studies and more based on student interest and teacher expertise. Local students will have opportunities to participate in athletics with neighbouring public schools.

Instruction will be live and interactive with teachers and students meeting multiple times throughout each school day. When students attend and participate, we can identify their unique learning needs and serve them well. Although the program is not designed to provide in person learning, teachers, students and families will work together to create a community of belonging, safety, growth and learning for all, while empowering our staff to continue to adapt, improve, and innovate to enhance student learning. Students will have opportunities to build social skills and collaborate with classmates both inside and outside of the classroom.

"Our goal at the Hub is to meet the unique needs of our students; we are excited to be able to grow our program and share this opportunity with all Alberta families. We look forward to the 2021-2022 school year where we will continue to work collaboratively with our staff, students and families to enhance and extend the educational opportunities available in a virtual learning environment." Warren Buckler, Hub Virtual School Principal.

Background: Originally set up as a temporary online learning option during the pandemic, the Hub Virtual School allowed MHPSD to meet the needs of students and families who preferred virtual, at-home learning. “In our first year we developed a community culture with a focus on learning, participation and innovative virtual instruction; allowing us to learn about the unique needs of our students and families. Students flourished as they attended and actively participated in their live daily scheduled classes, small group instruction, as well as tutorial sessions all through the Google Apps for Education. With a goal to provide live instruction, students and families actively participated in a virtual school community which enabled collaborative learning within each classroom and saw students excel both individually and as a part of a larger group.” Warren Buckler, Hub Virtual School Principal.
