Medicine Hat, AB (April 7, 2021)
Beginning in September 2021 Alexandra Middle School (AMS) will offer a high-performance sports institute. The AMS Sports Institute will give students an opportunity to improve their athletic performance unlike any other program in Medicine Hat and the surrounding area. The Sports Institute will be open to all students regardless of athletic ability or sport of choice. Whether it be dance, gymnastics, hockey, basketball, golf or any other activity, this program will help our youth develop as an athlete. Specially trained staff, partnered with local Badlands Training Centre (BTC), mobility and fundamental movement expert Tom Wilde along with strength coach Megan Hilgendorf and sports therapist Janay Gregory, will help students reach their fullest potential.

Coaches will focus on improving athletic ability by fostering and cultivating the following areas:

  • CULTURE of sport
  • Functional movement
  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Agility
  • Sport and Performance Psychology
  • Nutrition
  • Recovery/injury prevention

Students will participate in activities that enhance their performance in their sport of choice. These activities may include: mountain biking, rock-climbing, kayaking, hiking, yoga, meditation and more.

AMS Sports Institute teachers will collaborate with coaches from outside of school to offer opportunities that align with a students sport of choice. There will also be some sport-specific opportunities (e.g., time allotted for the basketball player to work on a jump shot, the football player to work on strength, and the dancer to focus on flexibility).

One of the mandates of this program is to promote a culture of inclusiveness. We will not turn students away because cost is a barrier for them. A number of spots in each class will be reserved for students who will need financial support in order to participate. AMS will fundraise and work with local grant giving organizations to ensure funds are available so all students are able to participate.

AMS is committed to helping students
learn about physical and mental strength to improve their character and athletic performance. This program will prepare students for a future in athletics and a physically active lifestyle. We aim to create an environment and culture where all student-athletes can reach their full potential.
