 has begun for the 2021/22 school year. Take a minute  to fill out the forms that have been assigned to you, by following this step by step process:

1) 2021/22 Reenrolment Forms: You will need a Power School Parent Portal account to access online registration, please contact your child’s school if you do not have an account. If you have an account and need to retrieve your login information, please click "Forgot Username or Password" and follow the process. DO NOT CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT.

Do not use the PowerSchool App. You can only access online registrations forms using a website browser and our links and forms work best if completed on a computer or laptop. Mobile devices may not display forms correctly. 

2) Log into your PowerSchool Parent Portal account and click on SchoolEngage icon (multi coloured grad cap) in the left menu at the bottom. This will open the SchoolEngage webpage. 

3) Once you are in SchoolEngage click on Students; all your children who are currently enrolled in MHPSD schools will be listed here.    

4) Choose a student name and a Forms menu will pop up in the top right corner of the page. In this menu, you will see the 2021/22 Reenrolment Form, click on the small notebook icon to open it. Fill out the form and repeat this process for each student. If you need to edit this form after you have submitted it, please follow the steps above to get back to the form and make the necessary changes. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s school.  


NEW STUDENT REGISTRATION: If you have a child that will be new to our system for 2021/22 stay logged in to SchoolEngage and follow this step by step process: 

  1. In the left menu click on Add Student 
  2. Fill out student information and click Save 

  3. Click on Students in the left menu and the name of the student that you just entered will be listed in this section. Click on the (new) student name and a Forms menu will pop up in the top right corner of the page. In this menu you will see you will see the 2021/22 Application for Student Registration form, click on the small notebook icon to open it. Fill out the form and repeat this process for each new student you have added. If you need to edit this form after you have submitted it, please follow the steps above to get back to the form and make the necessary changes. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s school. 

REGISTER TO RIDE: Families that qualify will be able to select school bus transportation during the re-enrolment and new student registration process. For more information about school bus registration please visit our website

Our great community, like all others across the planet, has been dealt a heavy blow by COVID-19. Add to that the economic challenges that were with us prior to the arrival of the pandemic, and ours has been a uniquely difficult year

As I say, though, ours is a great community.

Through the months between March and now, we have pulled together. Families have reached out to our schools for help and to offer help. The broader community has wrapped their arm around our children and has given to their care; perhaps their most significant contributions have been confidence and compassion. 

Confidence in the efforts of our amazing staff has allowed us to learn and grow as the very nature of our work has been shaken and challenged, producing hardship and a good deal of growth. The grace of which I have often spoken and written gave us space to try new things, to fail, to learn, and to grow. Your confidence, and that of community, has allowed our own to grow.  We know that whatever the scenario, we have the tools and skills to respond well. We are confident. 

We can, in hard times, turn inward and 
harden our hearts to those outside our family or “bubble”. It is natural to grow more protective and to retreat in our focus. Our community, while not one that agrees on all things, has committed to compassion. We see compassion in work of private citizens and families to bolster supports for people experiencing challenges with mental health. We see compassion in the shared commitment of staff and families to build and deepen relationships around the service of our community’s children. We see compassion in our Division staff who voluntarily engage in the work of charities and not-for-profit organizations in our community. We see compassion in the commitment of our community to protect our most vulnerable from the virus, and a growing commitment to support local businesses that are facing devastating losses.  

I carry with me a very real belief that we will 
emerge stronger. Our community will have been tested like never before and we will have done more than just survive. We will have grown in our confidence in one another and will have opened a spring of compassion that will serve our community well in the years ahead.

For our entire community I wish you rest and joy.  Know that the staff of Medicine Hat Public School Division cannot wait to see, and serve, your children in the new year.

MEDICINE HAT & DISTRICT FOOD BANK SUPPORTS: The food bank will be closed from December 24, 2020 - January 3, 2021

Brown Bag nutrition kits will continue to be available until December 23, 2020 and will resume on January 4, 2021. If you are a student or parent that is new to the program and would like to order a nutrition kit, please go online and fill out the foodbank form by December 22, 2020 

If your family needs additional support from the Food Bank please call 403.528.4313 and leave a message and a contact phone numbersomeone will get back to you by the next business day.


Our Family School Liaison workers will be away from the office, returning on January 4, 2021. They will check email and voicemail messages periodically and will reply as soon as possible. Please remember, never use email in an emergency. December 11, 2020: Since the government of Alberta declared a public health emergency on Nov 24, new health measures have been put in place to address the rising spread of COVID-19 in our province. Our school system, like all others in the province, has been impacted by the new measures we have been directed to implement.


Students in grades 7-12 moved into Scenario 3 (at-home learning online) starting Nov 30, 2020, and are expected to return to school for in-person learning on Jan 11, 2021. Students in ELP and kindergarten (ELP/k) through grade 6 will shift to Scenario 3 for at-home learning from Jan 4-8, 2021.  All students in ELP/k - grade 12 are expected to return for in-person learning on Jan 11, 2021.  

Please review the figure below to take note of important dates for at-home learning.

Student at The Hub: Students that are currently enrolled in the Hub will continue to learn online. Any Hub students that wish to return to their home school for in-person will have the opportunity to transfer two weeks prior to the end of this quarter.  

There will be some exceptions where students in grades 1 - 6 will continue to go to school and learn in person. The exceptions will be as follows:

Specialized programming: We will continue in-person learning for students who are currently served in congregated, specialized programs and those who are served in inclusive settings but who require significant modifications and supports in order to have their needs met. School staff have already begun to reach out directly to families of students who will be included. 


It is critical that all students in grades 1- 6 actively engage in at-home online learning. A good deal of important work must be done during this period so that students are prepared to succeed in their grades when they return to in-person learning. While we expect to return to in-person (Scenario 1) learning on Jan 11, 2021, we are not guaranteed of that. If our experience with COVID-19 has taught us anything it has been to prepare for all possibilities. Being fully engaged during the week of Jan 4, 2021 will help build at-home learning habits that will serve our students well if the Government of Alberta extends the period of Scenario 3 learning beyond the planned date.

Our Scenario 3 plan has been adjusted to expect a higher level of engagement than the minimum standard that was set out this past spring and summer by Alberta Education (see instructional expectations for elementary below). This was done in order to honour the programs of study.

Of course, we know that having children at home for their schooling creates special challenges for almost all families. Please communicate with your child’s teacher so that they know what you need and can support you.  While we want to “raise the bar” over what we were directed to do in March, we want families to feel supported and heard.


Teachers will either pre-record their lessons or deliver/record a live lesson. It is important to note that students are better served by being in attendance in real-time, as they benefit from the ability to ask questions and engage in class discussions that are critical parts of the learning process. Attendance will be taken, and teachers will engage with families to encourage attendance and to address areas for improvement and available supports.

While we hope that students attend their classes in real-time, we know that sometimes this is not possible. Recorded lessons will be saved securely to Google Classroom so that students can view them at any time.  Families are asked to communicate with their child’s teacher as soon as possible if they experience challenges. This will allow teachers to work with families to support student learning. 



  • focus on early literacy and numeracy, physical skills and wellbeing
  • approximately 1.5 hours a day

Grades 1 to 6


  • Focus on core curricular outcomes of mathematics, language/literacy and wellness (with a focus on physical and mental health)
  •  approximately 2.5 hours per day Learning may include any combination of direct instruction (live or pre-recorded), live connection (whole class or small group) and/or independent student work time with teacher availability.

Until we return to in-person learning, exams and assessments will be completed online.

Students that do not have access to the internet or a device for learning are asked to contact the school principal to arrange options for support. While students will not be expected to work on a device all day, it is important that all students have access to one. 

ELP/k programming will be provided in Google Classroom. Teachers will offer scheduled online instruction in a few different formats: whole-class, small group and individual instruction.

Grade 1-6 teachers will use the tools in Google Classroom for all aspects of programming. Teachers will offer scheduled online instruction in a few different formats: whole-class, small group and individual instruction.

It is a priority that our school staff continues to support the social-emotional health, mental health and wellness of our students during the at-home learning period. The following in-person programs and supports will continue to be available to students and families as needed.

  • Specialized programming: We will continue in-person learning for students who are currently served in a congregated, specialized program and those who are served in inclusive settings but who require significant modifications and supports in order to have their needs met. School staff has already begun to reach out to families with more information about the impact this may have on them.
  • Parent-teacher meetings: Parents and students are still able to access the school building by appointment only.
  • Counselling supports: Students and families that require support from a school counsellor, FSLW, therapist, etc. may receive online services or will be permitted to come into the school for scheduled appointments as necessary.
  • Nutrition: The Medicine Hat & District Food Bank will support student nutrition by providing weekly brown bag lunch packages that can be used in the home. Parents or students can apply for the program HERE, then packages can be picked up from the food bank or delivered directly to your home.
  • School bus transportation: Transportation services will remain available to any students in ELP/k - grade 6 that will continue to attend in-person learning at school.

Students or visitors that enter a school building will be required to follow all public health and safety measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.


SPORTS AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Sports, extracurricular activities and school clubs will only be permitted to operate if they are able to shift to virtual meetings. All activities that are unable to move to a virtual meeting space will be suspended until further notice. There will be no in-school meetings, open gym, practices, team, or individual sporting activities in secondary schools until further notice.

NEW STUDENTS WILL NOT BE TRANSFERRED TO THE HUB AT- HOME LEARNING SCHOOL: Students who are currently enrolled in The Hub will continue to learn with their Hub class. New transfers to The Hub (ELP/k – grade 6) will not be permitted until after Jan 11, 2021. Since all students in our elementary schools have been directed to online learning, teachers will be exclusively planning for programming in this environment, eliminating the need to change schools. When we return to Scenario 1, families of ELP/k – grade 6 students will have the option to transfer to The Hub once again.

PLAY AND LEARN PROGRAM: The Play and Learn Program will not operate when in-person learning is not available.   

Community Early Learning Program (CELP) This program is offered in private preschools and childcare centers and will continue to operate in Scenario 1 as those facilities will remain open.

We are all grappling with the change in our circumstances and are wondering how it might impact us and the ones we love. People have expressed a range of emotions about the new restrictions announced, particularly with respect to the shift in education delivery. This transition will not be without its challenges; we have highly skilled teachers and students who are familiar with the tools they need in order to succeed. We also have a loving and committed community to support our students. We know that commitment, grace and compassion will lead the way.

November 24, 2020: Government of Alberta Announcement

As you may have already heard, the government of Alberta has declared a public health emergency and new measures have been put in place to address the rising spread of COVID-19 in our province. Our school system, like all others in the province, will be impacted by the new measures we have been directed to implement.

Students in grades 7-12 will move into Scenario 3 starting Monday, Nov 30, 2020. They will remain in Scenario 3 until the week following our Winter Vacation and will return to Scenario 1 (in-person learning) on Monday, January 11, 2021.

Students in ELP through Grade 6 will remain in Scenario 1 (in-person learning) until the beginning of the Winter Vacation. Following the winter vacation, they will work in Scenario 3 (at-home learning) for one school week and will return to in person learning on Monday, January 11, 2021. Teachers will provide instruction during the week of Scenario 3; as indicated below, our plan will be updated in the next few days so that staff and families have a clear picture of what to expect.

All diploma exams for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year are now optional. The decision to write diploma exams resides with students and their families. Students will receive an exemption if they choose not to write an exam, however if an exam is written it will continue to be worth 30% of their final mark.

This evening and tomorrow our leadership team will take what we have heard today and work to make minor adjustments to our Scenario 3 plan.

Tomorrow we will send communications to students, staff and families about what to expect in the weeks to come.

I know that this shift feels disconcerting. I also know that we have done much between March and now to prepare for what lies ahead. We are committed to doing our very best for our students. We will face the challenges that lie ahead with grace and with the understanding that each student, family and staff member must overcome unique challenges to succeed.

November 10, 2020: 
We, like you, have been watching the news and keeping an eye on the numbers associated with COVID-19. As the local and provincial numbers climb, and pressure on the health care system mounts, the likelihood of education shifting into scenario 2 or 3 grows. The actions described below are intended to help us be ready just in case we are directed to Scenario 3 (a state where no students are permitted at school). This is NOT because we have been told that this is about to happen. We just want to be prepared.

Actions: Your child may have been encouraged to bring home their Chromebook and other school materials today. We are beginning to ask our students in Grades 3 and up to take home what they would need in the event that we were directed to Scenario 3.  We are not asking them to bring all of their school supplies back and forth.

If we are directed to Scenario 3 (as opposed to Scenario 2 where ELP to Grade 2 will attend daily), arrangements will be made so our ELP to Grade 2 students can collect their materials from schools. Likewise, if your child in Grade 3 or higher does not bring home their device or materials, we will offer opportunities to pick up supplies from the school.

Our goal throughout our COVID-19 response has been to calmly prepare for what might occur. This allows us to respond in a similar manner when change is required with very little notice.   

We have every expectation that we will be back in school Monday. Medicine Hat Public School Division, as always, awaits direction and is invested in serving students well. This step does not mean that we are advocating for a change to occur, rather it is precautionary. We are simply planning for what we hope won’t happen.

November 6, 2020: Cohort Information - Planning for Scenario 2

In August, the provincial government asked school systems to develop re-entry plans for three different scenarios:

  • Scenario 1 – the plan we are currently following
  • Scenario 2 – a plan with more restrictive cohorts and reduced daily student population
  • Scenario 3 – At home learning

While our hope is that we can stay in Scenario 1 all year long, we want to have a preparedness plan in place for cohorts in Scenario 2, JUST IN CASE. In the MHPSD Scenario 2 plan, cohorts are defined as between 15 -20 people, including adults; this will apply from ELP to Grade 12.

By developing Day A Cohorts and Day B Cohorts for our grade 3-12 students we are able to make sure that school bus transportation and class lists will be in place and communicated to families well in advance of Scenario 2. It is important to note that in the MHPSD Scenario 2 plan, students in ELP-grade 2 will ALL attend school each day. 

  • Day A Cohorts - Mon/Wed and alternating Fridays
  • Day B Cohorts - Tue/Thurs and alternating Fridays

Our Day A/B Cohort plan is designed around these key principles:

  1. ELP – grade 2 students attend school every day
  2. Specialized and outreach students attend school every day
  3. To keep as many of our grade 3 – grade 9 students that live in the same household attending school on the same cohort day to support child care planning for families
  4. To link, as best we can, our grade 10-12 students to siblings in grade 3-9 to support child care planning for families. Important to note:

It is crucial that you are aware that this is “preparedness planning”; WE ARE NOT SHIFTING INTO SCENARIO 2 AT THIS TIME. If we do get direction from the government to go into scenario 2 then we will be prepared.

The Scenario 2 Day A/B Cohort Calendar runs from the middle of Oct to the end of June. This will allow us to move to a modified calendar at a moment’s notice. Important calendar notes:

  • Days are balanced based on an Oct 19th start date
  • Dec 18 and June 25 are considered ½ days
  • There is an imbalance in the number of Fridays for each cohort because of statutory holidays.

Once again, this calendar is for preparedness planning and DOES NOT mean we are shifting to scenario 2 at this point. 

Your child’s cohort will be communicated by the school either early next week or the week of November 23rd.

Cohort Appeals
Creating Day A/B Cohorts is a very difficult process, trying to balance class schedules and make sure that all siblings are in the same cohort. For this reason, principals will only consider appeals that meet the following criteria:

  • Family based appeals – must be able to demonstrate that students in the same family are not currently in the same scheduled cohort
  • If it involves a high school student, the appeal must be related to supporting child care for a sibling

Safety is the priority in our re-entry plan, so we are focused on ensuring that families are able to attend school in the same cohort. We know that there are many other reasons people may want to request changes, but we want to be sure that our school admin teams and clerical are not overwhelmed by multiple requests that do not fall into the criteria above. The more complicated the situation, the more difficult it becomes to build perfect solutions for all.  It is for this reason that we are unable to engage the system in scheduling to support cohorting because of friendship and extended family connections.

Again, this communication does not mean that the move to Scenario 2 is imminent. We wanted to communicate as early as possible, so you can plan your family’s response and allow for appeals to be made based on the criteria above.

We are two months into the 2020-2021 school year and while we have made concerted efforts to maintain stable, safe and caring learning environments, we are still faced with many challenges that impact our MHPSD family.

The Board of Trustees of Medicine Hat Public School Division recognizes the pressures being placed on students and staff amidst the challenges associated with delivering the essential service of education, during a global pandemic. We are incredibly proud of the work done by families and students to follow school guidelines that are not normal or comfortable. This is exhausting work and staff, students and parents are tired. We know that caring for the wellbeing of the people we serve, and those that serve them, is also essential.

The Board of Trustees of Medicine Hat Public School Division has voted to modify the 2020-2021 school calendar for the month of November. By shifting the calendar, we will be able to create a short break for staff and students beginning on Remembrance Day. There will be no school for students or staff on November 11, 12 & 13, 2020. In order to achieve this, November 20 will no longer be a PD day. See the table below:

COVID-19 – Update to the Alberta Health Daily Checklist 

We would like to inform families that Alberta Health Services updated the Alberta Health Daily Checklist for children under the age of 18 (this also applies to students that are over the age of 18 and attending high school) and these changes will come into effect on Nov 2, 2020. Please take a moment to review the changes to the guide.  

Overview of updates to the Alberta Health Daily Checklist:

  • Symptoms of runny nose and sore throat have been removed from the mandatory isolation checklist for Albertans under 18.
  • The COVID isolation symptoms for children are now one (or more) of the following: cough, fever, loss of taste or smell and shortness of breath. If a child has any of these COVID symptoms:
  • If a child has one of the following other symptoms: chills; sore throat or painful swallowing; runny nose or congestion; feeling unwell or fatigue; nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; unexplained loss of appetite; muscle or joint aches; headache; or conjunctivitis (pink eye):

Based on updated guidance from Alberta Education and Alberta Health Services we have made some adjustments to our MHPSD Re-entry Plan - Scenario 1. You are welcome to re-read the entire plan, however we have created a simplified summary document below:

You will note that there are shifts in several areas. The changes include, but are not limited to, paper handling, off-site activities, adult volunteers and guest speakers in schools, signing and face coverings. 

With respect to off-site activities and to guest speakers in schools, I have instructed school principals to limit, as much as is reasonable, the number of people coming and going from inside our schools during the school day in order to reduce the number of potential opportunities for the spread of COVID-19. 

With this in mind, principals are asked to limit off-site activities to those that address critical outcomes in the Programs of Study. Likewise, the adult volunteers and guests in classrooms must support outcomes of the programs of study and will be considered only when virtual opportunities are not available or appropriate to the task. If you have questions or comments about how your school plans to apply these guidelines, please contact your school principals.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to provide safe and caring learning environments for students and staff.

Just a reminder that the Chief Medical Officer of Health requires that all families do a daily health check before sending kids on the bus or coming to school.


IF YOU HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED: Your order is being processed and Chromebooks are being delivered to students at school starting next week. Devices for students who are attending in person will go directly to the student. We understand that some Hub/at-home learners still do not have devices and we will work to make sure those devices are available for students on Monday at their home school. The school will notify AT-Home/Hub Learners when the device will be ready for pick up.

We have experienced some inconsistencies in our registrants for the Hub and ask that you have patience with us as we work to correct any issues. If you are not sure of what you need to do to prepare for Monday and need more information please contact

  2. If you have multiple children that you are purchasing for, you will need to complete this process for each child.
  3. Chromebooks will be delivered to your child’s school once they are processed and ready for learning.
  4. If a student is registered in the Online HUB (K-9), the Chromebook will still go to their regular enrolment school. Families will be notified when the chromebook is available and will need to arrange for pick up. 

Important notes:

  1. Each of our categories (new, used and French keyboard devices) have limited quantities and will be available on a first come, first serve basis.
  2. If you are ordering a French keyboard device, please note that delivery of these devices is delayed until later in September or early October. If families choose this option, we will work to provide interim loaner devices to students – however we will need a few days to manage this. 
  3. Note:  For current users of SchoolCash Online, while you will be using your existing account, the process is slightly different as you need to fill out the form first and sign into SchoolCash second.

We, at The Hub, have been eagerly anticipating the first day of school (Monday, August 31).  Our goal has been to communicate with all Hub families through a phone conversation and a follow up email.   Our teachers were able to contact many of you today and we want to thank you for your enthusiasm regarding the programming for at-home learning.  Our teachers were thrilled to have conversations with you today.  We have missed you! 

We are currently in the process of finalizing staff due to an increase of student enrollments.  Due to these fluctuations, we have been unable to communicate with all families today.  We want to assure you our teachers will be in communication with you Monday, either through individual Google Meets, or through a phone conversation.

Hello families and staff,

What follows is an update about transportation and some recently updated information from the Government of Alberta regarding our response to Covid-19.  Of course, more information will follow from your school in the coming days.  Administration and clerical staff will be in all schools this coming Monday.


The moment you have been waiting for is here!  School bus registration is open deadline to register is August 26, 2020). There are two ways to register.

Registration Option #1: You will have received an email (with the subject: Medicine Hat Public School Division – Form Has Been Assigned), you can follow the instructions in the email to complete bus registration on a desktop, laptop or tablet. If you do not require school bus registration, please ignore the email asking you to register. If you choose to fill out the form on your smart phone, please follow the instructions below:

We have received many thoughtful questions about devices and Chromebooks, so we developed FAQs to provide you with answers:


We want to thank families for taking the time to fil out our MHPSD Learning Intent Form, we have had 4500 responses. The form is open until Monday, August 24 for families that have not yet completed it.

We understand that some families may want to change their mind after they have filled out the intent form, and that is OK. There is still time to make changes to your learning intent form and if you need to do so please call your child’s school on or after August 24 and they will be happy to help you.


The Government of Alberta has updated their re-entry plan and as such, we have made the following changes to our MHPSD School Re-entry Plan Scenario 1. What follows is a brief summary of the changes so that you do not have to read the whole thing to find them. 

1) Masks

Masks Exemption: Exemptions to mask requirement for all teachers and staff in all school settings and students in grades 4-12 include:

  1. Persons who are unable to place, use or remove a non-medical face mask without assistance;
  2. Persons unable to wear a non-medical face mask due to a mental or physical concern or limitation;
  3. Persons consuming food or drink in designated areas;
  4. Persons engaged in physical exercise;
  5. Persons providing care or assistance to a person with a disability where a non-medical face mask would hinder that caregiving or assistance;
  6. Persons engaging in services that require the temporary removal of the non-medical face mask, and
  7. Spaces where physical barriers have been installed between persons.

Exemption under criteria 2 will be granted by the Principal with the support of a signed note or letter from a doctor or other appropriate professional (nurse practitioner, psychologist). In circumstances where the school has prior knowledge of a condition or need, the Principal may grant the exemption without a new note.  Please contact your school Principal to discuss.

Note: The emphasis on masks in all the documents provided by government in the past several weeks has been significant.  Principals will not be granting exemptions based on preference or opinion.  The need for exemption must be compelling and supported by the above documentation or prior knowledge of professional staff. Please know that school administrators are not trying to be difficult.  They have been charged with a very challenging be true to the Government’s direction and thoughtful about when to provide exemptions.  Just call and have a conversation and know that they are working hard to be caring and understanding.

Mask Storage: Families and staff will work together to educate students on how to properly put on and remove a reusable mask, emphasizing:

  • Washing hands or applying hand sanitizer before handling
  • Handling masks by the ties/ear loops/elastics
  • Avoid touching the mask once it is on
  • Changing masks when they become wet or soiled

Masks While Teaching: If students are all seated, and the teacher is in a designated area at the front of the class with at least two metres of physical distance from the closest student, they may remove their mask to teach.  Your child’s teacher will clear with students about why they are able to remove the mask to reinforce/model behaviors.

2) School Sports

Starting Sept 1, in-school athletic practices will be permitted with the following considerations:

  • Cohort limit of 50; one cohort may not interact with another
  • A student may only participate one cohort at a time (unless there is 14 days between changing cohorts)
  • No scrimmages or competition between schools
  • Any student that wishes to play school sports will not be permitted to take part in any other sports off campus
  • General safety protocols being employed in schools should be observed at all times, such as hand sanitizer, masks, physical distancing, etc.
  • Stricter cleaning guidelines
  • Provincial championships are postponed until AB Gov announces stage 3 re-entry

3) Daily Health Checklist (Updated)

Each day, before leaving home, staff, students, visitors, and volunteers who will access the school for work or education, must self-screen for symptoms of common cold, influenzas, COVID-19 and other infectious respiratory diseases. By completing the Alberta Health Daily Checklist before leaving the home, members of the school community are committing to working to ensure that no one attends to a school building with COVID-19 symptoms.

4) Cafeteria/Food Services (Updated)

  • Providing shared treats for the classroom will be allowed if there is a designated server serving the food, appropriate hand hygiene, and physical distancing.
  • Schools with full cafeteria, concessions, cafes, stores, and/ or programs that handle and prepare foods must follow the Guidance For Restaurants, Cafes, Pubs, and Bars. There is no restriction on students working in food establishments within schools; workplace control measures must be in place.

5) Paper Handling

All paper handling will be addressed in accordance with the procedures from Alberta Health Services. Paper, library books and other items that cannot be disinfected should be stored for 72 hours between use.

6) Responding to Covid – 19 in Schools

7) AHS Expectations of Staff and Students Regarding Testing

Alberta Health is working with Alberta Health Services to develop a strategy for COVID-19 testing for teachers.

  • All teachers and school staff are recommended to have a COVID-19 test before school starts to help better understand baseline risk in this group.
  • Work is being done to speed turn-around time to results for all tests, rather than expediting some groups over others.

The staff of Medicine Hat Public School Division are approaching the coming year, like the community we serve, with a mixture of excitement and trepidation.  So much about the places we work, and the way we work in them, has been touched by the responses to Covid-19.  We are excited to see our students and to be with our colleagues again.  We are also concerned that we do all that has been added to our work the right way, in order to protect our community’s children and the staff that serve them.

Know that we are all in for your children!  Their safety, our community and our shared success are important to us.  We are thankful for the support you have given us in the months past and appreciate the grace you will show us as we work through this new way of being.

We are excited about the first day of classes on Monday August 31. 
We are also mindful of the great responsibility we bear for ensuring that we do all we can to open as safely as possible.  We understand the challenges we face as a community and are working hard to bring calm and focus to our work with our students.

In order to prepare for the start of school, we need all families to complete our Learning Intent Form. This form lets us know if you intend to have your child attend in-class or at-home learning and will help us assign staff to meet your child’s needs. Medicine Hat Public School Division will provide in-class programming to all who wish to attend in person.  We are also providing English language programming for at-home students from Early Learning tGrade 9 through a new online school known as The Hub. French Immersion and High School students will receive in-class and at-home service through their home school.  Timetable, school calendar and staffing changes are being made to support them in this work.
