Notice of changes to Policy 634: Banned Substances

We care about the health and safety of our students and are greatly concerned about the increased presence of electronic cigarettes and associated smoking materials on school property, at school sanctioned events and on school buses. As a result we have made significant policy changes to reflect our concern, and our commitment to seeking solutions.

We have partnered with Alberta Health Services and Medicine Hat Police Service to address the issue of vaping in our schools as part of a comprehensive review of our approach to all banned substances in schools and at school sanctioned events. Policy 634 has been reviewed at Coordinating Committee, individual School Councils, the Council of School Councils and by school and system administration. All support the Board’s commitment to addressing this issue through policy, education, community mental health supports, enforcement and public information.

The Medicine Hat Public Board of Education has passed Policy 634 – Banned Substances which applies to all students, staff and visitors. Outlined in the policy is direction to school administrators regarding how they address the possession of banned substances.

Although changes to this policy may cause inconvenience, we believe that it is critically important to focus on the health and wellbeing of the people we serve. We ask that families read through the policy to become aware of how our process has changed (see pages 2-4). It is important to note that the policy is written to express our expectation that schools approach this issue with balance; aggressively addressing violations of the policy while, as the same time, working to connect people with appropriate supports. You invited to direct questions and comments about the implementation of this policy to your school administration.
