(March 13, 2019) I want to take this opportunity to update you on High School Redesign. Through this initiative, teachers, principals and superintendents are working with students, parents and community members to rethink and redesign practices within high schools across Alberta.

T
his work is essential as we prepare students to be active, engaged and successful participants in an increasingly knowledge-based and global society. High School Redesign is about shifting mindsets and changing practices in our high schools to enhance student engagement, improve student learning outcomes and increase the likelihood of high school completion. It is also aimed at bringing all education stakeholders together to rethink how high schools can become increasingly student‑centred and prepare students for their future.

Evidence coming out of High School Redesign indicates that the work underway in participating schools is improving outcomes for students. Results show increased high school completion rates and more students successfully reaching their education goals through innovative approaches to curriculum and responsiveness to student programming needs.

Building on this success, I am pleased to provide another opportunity for school authorities and school teams to join High School Redesign beginning in September 2019. This new intake will provide even more participants the opportunity to:

  • rethink how high schools can ensure learning is inclusive and student-centred;
  • focus action research on High School Redesign;
  • collaborate with all education stakeholders; and
  • organize outside of the 25-hour-per-credit requirement as outlined in the Guide To Education and the Funding Manual.

More information about High School Redesign is available on the Alberta Education website. If your schools are interested in becoming part of High School Redesign and you would like to learn more about the process, including the school plan that must be submitted on or before May 15, 2019, please contact Debbie Rowley, Field Services Manager, at debbie.rowley@gov.ab.ca or 780-415-5877 (toll-free by first dialing 310‑0000).

Thank you for your ongoing work in supporting success for Alberta students.
